In this hands-on workshop, April Stone, a member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and a black ash basket weaver, will share her harvesting and basket making practice.
Attendees will gain insight into knowledge and practices that can inform more sustainable and circular design practices across disciplines. Learn about reciprocal practices of caring for and harvesting resources, approaches to extend the use of designed objects through care and maintenance, building community through repair practice, and enriching the stories of designs as they age.
This is a drop-in workshop with open weaving time from 11:30 am–1:30 pm. Members of the University community are welcome to stop by, ask questions, and try out weaving. April will give a presentation of her work and processes at 12:30 pm.
This event is a collaboration between the Biomaterials Lab Advisory Group of the Kusske Design Initiative and Dare to Repair! Keeping Designed Objects in Use, a seminar designed to guide students through individual actions they can take to decrease their environmental impact, and to begin to consider larger system changes that will enable product longevity on a bigger scale. Dare to Repair! is taught by Lindsey Strange (lecturer, apparel design) and Molly Sanford (fabrication director).
